Ecoenzymatic stoichiometry reveals widespread soil phosphorus limitation to microbial metabolism across Chinese forests

چکیده
Abstract Forest soils contain a large amount of organic carbon and contribute to terrestrial sequestration. However, we still have poor understanding what nutrients limit soil microbial metabolism that drives release across the range boreal tropical forests. Here used ecoenzymatic stoichiometry methods investigate patterns nutrient limitations within profiles (organic, eluvial parent material horizons) 181 forest sites throughout China. Results show that, in 80% these forests, microbes were limited by phosphorus availability. Microbial limitation increased with depth from forests as ecosystems become wetter, warmer, more productive, is affected anthropogenic nitrogen deposition. We also observed an unexpected shift latitudinal pattern lowest warm temperate zone (41-42°N). Our study highlights importance restoring predicting their sinks.

Ecoenzymatic Stoichiometry and Ecological Theory
The net primary production of the biosphere is consumed largely by microorganisms; whose metabolism creates the trophic base for detrital foodwebs, drives element cycles, and mediates atmospheric composition. Biogeochemical constraints on microbial catabolism, relative to primary production, create reserves of detrital organic carbon in soils and sediments that exceed the carbon content of the ...
متن کاملPhosphorus limitation, soil-borne pathogens and the coexistence of plant species in hyperdiverse forests and shrublands.
Hyperdiverse forests occur in the lowland tropics, whereas the most species-rich shrublands are found in regions such as south-western Australia (kwongan) and South Africa (fynbos). Despite large differences, these ecosystems share an important characteristic: their soils are strongly weathered and phosphorus (P) is a key growth-limiting nutrient. Soil-borne pathogens are increasingly being rec...
متن کاملDifferential Nutrient Limitation of Soil Microbial Biomass and Metabolic Quotients (qCO2): Is There a Biological Stoichiometry of Soil Microbes?
BACKGROUND Variation in microbial metabolism poses one of the greatest current uncertainties in models of global carbon cycling, and is particularly poorly understood in soils. Biological Stoichiometry theory describes biochemical mechanisms linking metabolic rates with variation in the elemental composition of cells and organisms, and has been widely observed in animals, plants, and plankton. ...
متن کاملSoil phosphorus constrains biodiversity across European grasslands.
Nutrient pollution presents a serious threat to biodiversity conservation. In terrestrial ecosystems, the deleterious effects of nitrogen pollution are increasingly understood and several mitigating environmental policies have been developed. Compared to nitrogen, the effects of increased phosphorus have received far less attention, although some studies have indicated that phosphorus pollution...
متن کاملDynamic Responses of Phosphorus Metabolism to Acute and Chronic Dietary Phosphorus-Limitation in Daphnia
Food quality is highly dynamic within lake ecosystems and varies spatially and temporally over the growing season. Consumers may need to continuously adjust their metabolism in response to this variation in dietary nutrient content. However, the rates of metabolic responses to changes in food nutrient content has received little direct study. Here, we examine responses in two metabolic phosphor...
